MAKING LIGHT OF IT

Find it or create it. Every photo needs some light.

Finding it takes awareness, observation and knowledge about how your camera is going to see it. Being a good available light photographer is fun but often you don’t have much control.

Creating light is a whole new ball game, especially with flashes. You have to guess what’s going to happen. It’s quite a skill that takes time to master.

One of my favorite photographers is Joe McNally who is truly a master of using small flashes (speedlights) to craft his images. While most of us will start with one on-camera flash and then start using two or three speedlights, Joe has been known to use 28 speedlights for a single shot.

Just imagine the dedication it takes just to charge all the batteries needed to power those suckers.
