TWO SIDED BRAIN

There is no question we have a two sided brain. It has two hemispheres, a left and a right, divided in the middle and connected by a bundle of nerves. Fiber.

The general belief is that the right side is intuitive and the left side is analytical. Iain McGilchrist, psychiatrist and writer, explains it further in his book The Master and His Emissaries. The right side sees the big picture, the connections and the left side pays attention to the details, the components.

As a culture we are leaning more and more towards the the details and components and less toward seeing the big picture. No doubt that affects us as individuals and as photographers. It becomes more habitual to focus on the specific ways to do things rather than the overall pattern.

But the beauty of photography is that it brings our thinking back to the right side. Doing photography engages many of the activities of the right hemisphere. Finding, seeing and composing a photo are definitely a big picture activities. The better we get at seeing and balancing all the elements, including timing, the better our photos get.

Complement this with knowing how to push the buttons and pull the levers and you got yourself a nifty picture.
