ANALOG

Photography is analog whether you are using a digital camera or not.

We’re creatures. We’re analog, defined as “relating to or represented by a continuously variable physical quantity such as spatial position, voltage, etc”

Living in the world, going out and seeing things, composing within a viewfinder and timing a photo is analog, a continuously variable physical experience. The machine may record the experience chemically or electronically but the experience physical.

When we are out there with a camera in our hands, there is a real “out there” there with photons bouncing off of it into our eyes where these photons stimulate nerves that then turn into thoughts that turn into actions which then produce pictures. It’s pretty continuous and keeps going as the pictures we produce get seen.

There is much in our world which is considerably less analog than the act of photography, much of it coming through screens we hold in our hands, on our desks or in our living rooms. These screens don’t really represent much continuous variable physical quantities or physical interaction. Looking at a screen is pretty passive. But the stuff flowing out does trigger plenty of emotional responses, good or bad. These emotional responses can be addictive but overall they aren’t very productive.

Photography is productive. It exercises our real life interactions with our physical world and when done well, elicits emotional responses (the more positive the better, in my opinion).

Exercise is good for you, so get your exercise. Get out and take photos any photos everywhere. Remember you don’t have to post your photos publicly or display your images for approval and they can always be easily deleted.

What’s that sneaker slogan? Just do it , dude.
